The competence center WIRKsam works together with companies from the Rhineland mining area and their employees to shape AI-supported work. The focus of the operational implementation is on innovative work and process flows according to modern scientific standards for work places while also strengthening competitiveness of companies. From the applications, training needs are derived and training concepts are developed. This provides companies in the textile and coal region, their employees, and interested parties access to information, further education, and demonstrators. WIRKsam considers itself a point of contact for citizens, politicians, local representatives, interest groups, and other local actors in structural change.
 
The competence center WIRKsam is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the funding measure “Regional Competence Centers of Labor Research” funding measure and supervised by the Project Management Agency Karlsruhe (PTKA) (FKZ: 02L19C600 ff.). WIRKsam is made up of five research institutes, three enablers, eleven application companies and eleven value partners. The participating research institutes include the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University (ITA) and the Institute for Mobile Autonomous Systems and Cognitive Robotics of Aachen University of Applied Sciences (MASKOR) as well as the ifaa - Institute of Applied Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics e. V. in Düsseldorf as project coordinator. Other research partners are the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology, Sankt Augustin (FIT) and the Chair Individual and Technology of RWTH Aachen University (iTec). Eleven small and medium-sized companies from industry are participating in the research project and are being supported by the interdisciplinary team of scientists.
